Books of residents are an important archival source used for genealogical research. The State Archive in Płock has preserved the books of residents for the years 1863-1878, 1878-1897 and 1898-1930. The presented index was based on the books of residents for the years 1898-1930. It is part of the archival set of documents “Akta miasta Płocka” (Files of the Town of Płock) (reference numbers 28302 – 28809). Books of residents contain in a synthetic form basic data on the residents of individual properties: name and surname, parents’ names, mother’s birth name, date of birth, place of birth, marital status, origin, religion, occupation, place of previous residence and annotations regarding death, change of the place of residence, resettlement or issuing an ID card.
The data contained in the presented index is: surname, first name, date of birth, street and house number. Names of individual people are repeated many times, which was related to changes in the place of residence (registration).
Books of residents may be helpful in genealogical research, but it is worth confronting the information contained therein, such as date of birth with civil registry records.
